Responding to the need in Haiti

Donate to Mennonite Financial/MCC fund for Haiti Relief online or in person

LANCASTER, PA. — As the world responds to the crisis in Haiti, Mennonite Financial Federal Credit Union, in partnership with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), has made it easier for everyone to help meet the needs of the Haitians and help heal the country, according to Kent Hartzler, president and CEO of the credit union.

“What we did was come up with a way anyone can direct funds into an MCC account at the credit union,” Hartzler said. “The nice thing is, MCC can monitor the deposits through our online banking system and even download the information they need to issue tax receipts to donors.”

Anyone, whether a member of the credit union or not, can now deposit directly into a designated MCC Haiti Relief account through any credit union office, by mail, or over the phone. Visit a local credit union branch for the details or call (800) 451-5719 to donate. In addition, MCC’s Web site (https://donate.mcc.org/project/haiti-earthquake) is able to receive secure online donations.

On Jan. 13, MCC released an initial $100,000 for immediate relief, according to Ron Flaming, director of International Programs. The organization anticipates the effort in Haiti being a multimillion dollar response over a number of years, focusing on rebuilding. The organization has also sent an immediate 1,000 water filters and will be a part of providing short- and long-term trauma care in the country.

Hartzler noted that setting up the donation system has paved the way for future efforts. “Now that we’ve done this for the Haiti effort, we’ll be able to respond even quicker to the next event,” he said. “Crises like these tend to slip out of sight for the average person too quickly. This is an effort to keep it in front of people and to make donating as easy as possible.”
